Central Virginia
The Central Virginia region surrounds Richmond, our capital. To the west of Richmond is Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, one of the most visited historic sites in Virginia. To the east and south the Virginia Capital Trail (partially constructed) runs along the James River from Richmond to Williamsburg. In the west, the James River Heritage Trail runs through downtown Lynchburg. This is prime cycling territory chocked full of history, including 1776 revolutionary times, Civil War battlefields, the WWII National D-day Memorial, and the 1950’s struggle to end segregation. Bicyclists can follow the state's official Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail, a designated Virginia driving trail.
