Activity Levels
We use three simple categories to give you a baseline from which to rate each tour – Easy, Moderate, and Challenging. Of course, you always bike at your own pace. The choice of mileage from several options is also up to you. Most of our bicycling vacations are designed for all abilities. Beginning riders choose the shorter route; advanced riders loop out for more miles. The various daily loops allow different mileages, and sometimes different terrain. You’ve chosen a Virginia Odysseys vacation because you want to be active, and perhaps challenge yourself a day or two. The choice is yours.
Easy Level
- 20-30 miles per day
- Flat terrain with perhaps a few small hills
- Leisurely Pace – 10-12 miles an hour. We’ll smell all the roses!
Moderate Level
- 30-50 miles per day
- Flat terrain or rolling terrain with a few small hills
- Steady Pace – 12-16 miles an hour
Challenging Level
- 30-100 miles per day
- Flat terrain or rolling terrain. And with both gentle climbs and steep 2-4 mile climbs
- Fast Pace – 16-22 miles an hour
Please think of our three categories as only very general beginning baseline descriptions. Many tours incorporate all three levels. For example, the Williamsburg Sampler and Explorer in the Tidewater Region have routes with mileages from 16 – 60. Some of the routes are flat and some are rolling. Some are on separate bike trails, which are perfect for young children, and some are on country roads better suited for the adults. Our tour routes in each Virginia Region can typically be customized to meet your group’s specific needs and abilities. We know that there may be very different biking abilities within your group. No problem – let us sort out the options and develop routes that suit all levels.
